Invisalign for kids and teens, and when braces would do the job better

Can my child get Invisalign? Often, yes: from about six with Invisalign First, and in the teens once most adult teeth are in. It works only if the trays are worn 20 to 22 hours a day, and a few problems are still better handled with braces.

The short answer

Can kids get Invisalign?

Yes, in many cases. Invisalign First is made for children of about six to ten, while baby and adult teeth are both in the mouth, and it is used to widen a narrow jaw and make room for the adult teeth.[2] Teenagers are treated once most adult teeth are through. Either way, the result depends on one thing parents control more than the clinic does: the trays have to be worn 20 to 22 hours a day.[3]

Orthodontists recommend a first check at about seven.[1] For most seven-year-olds that check ends with “not yet”, and we will tell you if that is the answer.

6 to 10

Invisalign First

For children who still have a mix of baby and adult teeth.[2] The early round: widening a narrow upper jaw, making room for crowded adult teeth, and correcting some crossbites. Early results are encouraging, and the research behind them is still small.[6]

11 to 14 +

Invisalign for teens

For children whose adult teeth are mostly through. The main round: straightening crowded teeth, closing gaps, and correcting many bite problems.

Invisalign itself is a set of clear, removable plastic trays (clear aligners). Each tray moves the teeth a fraction of a millimetre, your child moves on to the next one every week or two, and the teeth follow a sequence planned in advance on a 3D scan.

An orthodontist decides how the teeth move. A pediatric dentist decides whether the child in the chair is ready, and keeps the teeth under the trays healthy. Here, both look at your child.

The three questions to ask any clinic

Before you compare Invisalign prices

Two quotes that look far apart can be for different things. Ask each clinic the same three questions, in writing.

1How many trays does the plan include?
2Are refinements and retainers in the price?
3What happens, and what does it cost, if a tray is lost?
Our threshold

When we would use Invisalign, and when we would not

We would use it

  • A teenager with crowding or gaps who will keep the trays in 20 to 22 hours a day.[3]
  • A child of six to ten with a narrow upper jaw or a crossbite, where widening now makes room for the adult teeth. The evidence for doing this with aligners is promising, and still limited.[6]
  • A child who finds it hard to brush around brackets, or who has had cavities before. Studies find less plaque and fewer white marks on the teeth than with fixed braces.[7]

We would choose something else

  • A child who will not keep the trays in. Aligners only work while they are worn. Fixed braces do not depend on it.
  • Crowding alone at seven, with adult teeth still arriving. We would wait and review, as we would for braces.[5]
  • Upper front teeth that stick out a long way, at seven to eleven. A functional appliance is the treatment with a proven reason at that age.[5]
  • Movements aligners are poor at: pulling front teeth down, and turning rounded teeth such as the canines.[4]
  • An aligner kit sold online or by post, with no orthodontist examining your child in person. Never, for a child.[9]

If your child breathes through the mouth or snores, read airway and mouth breathing first: the airway is dealt with before the teeth are guided. For crowding, gaps and bites in general, see orthodontics for children.

Is it safe

Is Invisalign safe for children?

Yes, when an orthodontist examines your child in person first, with X-rays, and supervises the treatment from start to finish. The American Association of Orthodontists warns that treatment without an in-person exam can miss gum and bone problems.[9]

  • Cavities and white marks. A sugary drink taken with the trays in is held against the teeth for hours. With the trays in, your child drinks water only.[3] Dr. Paul checks the teeth at every visit, and everyday care for children’s teeth carries on through treatment.
  • Attachments. Small tooth-coloured bumps are bonded to some teeth so the trays can grip. They are polished off at the end.
  • Lost trays. Treatment slows down while a tray is missing. Call us the same day.
What it feels like

Does Invisalign hurt? It feels like pressure.

Each new tray feels tight for a day or two, then settles. In the first few days, patients on aligners report less pain than those with fixed braces; after about three months the difference disappears.[8]

There are no wires to poke the cheeks. If a tray edge rubs, tell us and it is smoothed at the clinic. Ordinary pain relief on the first night is usually enough.

What happens

What happens, from the first check to the retainer

  1. 1

A first check with Dr. Sanchit Paul

Teeth, growth, habits and breathing. Often the answer is “not yet”, and we say so.

  2. 2

Consultation and a 3D scan with Dr. Karan Bhalla

Photographs, X-rays, and a scan of the teeth instead of a mouthful of impression paste.

  3. 3

    The plan, on screen

How the teeth are planned to move, tray by tray, and how many trays, before you agree to anything.

  4. 4

    Fitting

Attachments placed, the first trays fitted, and practice putting them in and taking them out.

  5. 5

New trays at home, check-ups at the clinic

A new tray every week or two. Some children need a few extra trays at the end (refinements).

  6. 6

Retainers, and this part is not optional

Teeth drift back without them. Retainers are how the result is kept.

What it costs

What does Invisalign cost in Delhi NCR?

₹1,50,000 to ₹3,50,000
Align’s own range for Invisalign treatment in India[10]
Where a child falls in that range depends on how much the teeth need to move and how long it takes.

Whichever clinic you ask, ask the same three things: how many trays the plan includes, whether refinements and retainers are in the price, and what happens if a tray is lost.

Day to day

Living with aligners

  • 20 to 22 hours a day. The trays come out only to eat, to drink anything other than water, and to brush.[3]
  • Brush before they go back in. Food trapped under a tray sits on the teeth for hours.
  • Keep the case in the school bag. A tray wrapped in a napkin at lunch is easily thrown away.
  • A lost or broken tray. Call us the same day.
  • After treatment. Retainers, worn as Dr. Bhalla advises.

Questions parents ask

Questions parents ask about Invisalign

These are the questions parents search for most, in the words they use.

Often, yes. At ten many children still have some baby teeth, which is what Invisalign First is designed for.[2] Whether it suits your child depends on the problem and on whether the trays will be worn 20 to 22 hours a day.

Invisalign First is designed for children from about six.[2] Most children do not need treatment that early, so a first check at about seven usually comes first.[1]

Neither is better for every child. Aligners are easier to keep clean and hurt less in the first few days.[7][8] Braces do not depend on the child wearing them, and they handle some movements better.[4]

It is worth it when there is a clear reason to act early, such as a narrow upper jaw or a crossbite. The research on aligners at this age is encouraging and still small.[6] For crowding alone, waiting is often the better choice.[5]

Because it only works while it is worn, and some children will not keep the trays in. Aligners are also weaker at a few movements, such as turning rounded teeth.[4] In those cases braces are the better choice, and we will say so.

Align puts Invisalign treatment in India at ₹1,50,000 to ₹3,50,000.[10] Where your child falls depends on how much the teeth need to move and how long it takes.

Each new tray feels tight for a day or two. In the first few days aligners cause less pain than fixed braces, and the difference is gone by about three months.[8]

Many crossbites and overbites can be treated with aligners, sometimes with small elastics. For a growing child whose upper front teeth stick out a long way, a functional appliance has the stronger evidence.[5]

Not without an orthodontist examining your child in person. The American Association of Orthodontists warns that skipping the in-person exam and X-rays can miss gum and bone problems.[9]

Call us the same day. Depending on the stage, your child may move to the next tray or wear the previous one while a replacement is made.
